What’s the big idea?
Learn how to influence other people and negotiate outcomes, so that both parties feel they have achieved a ‘win-win’.
People who came on this course said:
“I used to be quite intimidated by developers when I had to negotiate and had never had any formal training. Now I have tools I can use to stand up for my position, while still being professional.”
“I have come away with ways I can personally improve my influencing skills rather than just something from a textbook - a lot more valuable.”
What is negotiation?
A negotiation conversation is one in which there is scope for movement on either side. If you have the power to tell someone what you are willing to pay and they have to ‘take it or leave it’, this is not negotiation, you are merely delivering a difficult message (see our Dealing with Difficult Conversations course). Only if both parties have the opportunity to shape the eventual agreement does it become a negotiation.
Negotiation tends to involve money, contracts and formal agreements. Influencing is more likely to involve ideas, processes and behaviour.
Who should attend?
Anyone who needs to influence others or who is new to negotiating. Prospective delegates may be negotiating with suppliers, colleagues or customers over fees, contracts, time or behaviour.
What will the training cover?
- Assertiveness & influencing
- Navigating a negotiation conversation - the question funnel & levels of assertiveness model
- Awareness of one’s own style and how to deal with different people
- The role of body language
- Dealing with objections
- Closing the deal
You will learn how to:
- Prepare for a negotiation
- Control the conversation
- Adapt your style to get maximum results
What will it be like?
This course balances theory with practise and there is a strong emphasis on the doing, so you can create the muscle memory of success. You will get the chance to practise conversations throughout the day and get feedback on how you are doing and what you could do differently. We work with your own style to make sure you feel confident and authentic. It’s a safe, fun and relaxed atmosphere.
For this course, delegates are given the workbooks before the course in order to prepare a scenario. That way, the day is largely dedicated to practise.
